October 2019- 10 minute stress relief? Yes, please!

Feeling stressed? Look no further than your furry friend!

As you probably already know, stress can wreak havoc on your health and happiness. Many a doctor appointment is related, directly or indirectly, to stress. Absenteeism at work can often be tied to stress. Relationships can also suffer from stress.

Soooo….what can you do to help alleviate the stress in your life? Thankfully, there are so many stress relieving techniques out there! This month, we’re going to focus on our four legged friends…

  • Pet a cat or dog– studies have shown that spending just 10 minutes petting your furbaby greatly reduces stress levels.
  • Go to a petting zoo– the combination of fresh air, sunshine, and farm animals is good for your well-being.
  • Volunteer to be a dog walker at an animal shelter– you’ll get some exercise, make a pooch super happy, and of course…lower your stress!

September 2019- Happy New Year!

September is a great month to let go of that which is holding you back.

What habits are keeping you stuck?

Fall is a time to reinvent ourselves, similar to the new year. For many it is a new year, since it is a new school year for students, teachers, and their parents. We get new school clothes and school supplies. We are in a new class, often with new classmates. We like to start the year off on the right foot! Even if you don’t go to school or work in a school, you can still use the change of seasons as a time to take a look at your life and decide which parts can be shed. Look at what no longer serves you and release it!

  • Go through your belongings and weed out the things that no longer serve a purpose in your life. If you don’t use it and you don’t love it, let it go.
  • Have a yard sale, sell items on Ebay or Facebook marketplace, or use one of the many selling apps such as LetGo or Poshmark
  • Donate items to charities that you no longer use (many animal shelters would love to have your old towels and blankets!)

After you’re done cleaning out those closets, let’s consider some other areas of your life that could use some clearing…

  • Are you holding onto any grudges? Realize that you were the one that’s hurting from it. Give yourself permission to forgive and move on.
  • Are there any habits that are holding you back from achieving the life you desire? Work on dropping them and replacing them with new healthy habits that bring you closer to a life you love.

August 2019- Zzzzzzzzzz

August is a great month to check in with your energy.

What’s making you tired?

Are you tired of feeling tired? If so, you’re not alone! Low energy is one of the biggest health complaints among Americans today.

Why are we feeling so sluggish? A lot of it can be blamed on our modern lifestyle…

  • Electricity/electronics– we’re inundated with light all day and night, which throws off our natural cycle off sleeping and waking with the sun
  • 24/7 fast paced living– we can shop around the clock, people can contact us at all hours, there’s never a break!
  • Poor sleep quality– our bedrooms tend not to be conducive to deep sleep due to televisions, cell phones, or other devices
  • Social media– the whole compare and despair cycle has us feeling like we’re not doing enough, earning enough, or owning enough
  • Stress– feeling like you need to constantly go, go, go to keep up can be exhausting

What can you do about this? Well, if you believe you may have a sleep disorder, check with your doctor. However, most of the causes of fatigue can be treated with lifestyle changes:

  • Detox from your devices- give yourself some time away from screens (even just an hour a day)
  • Shut down devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime
  • Limit how often you use social media- If you’re using it and you find your mood starting to tank, get off it and do something else! (Preferably something that involves moving your body)
  • Relax– give yourself down time regularly to rest and rejuvenate (take a nap, enjoy a hot bath, get a massage, meditate, do gentle yoga)
  • Get to bed on time– try to give yourself at least 7 hours to sleep (if you have trouble sleeping, try taking melatonin or using lavender oil to help you wind down)

July 2019- Detox yo self!

July is a great month to detox your body.

See how you could benefit from a detox!

Do you eat clean? Do you even know what that means?

Organic fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes, lean protein, healthy fats…..Yes! These are part of a clean diet, but even if this is the way you typically eat, your body can still be overrun with toxins.

The average newborn baby has nearly 300 known toxins in their umbilical cord blood! That’s crazy!

So why does this happen? There are toxins just about everywhere you look…

  • the water you drink
  • the air you breathe
  • the beauty products you apply
  • the household cleaning products you use

What can you do about this? Well, there’s no way to avoid toxins 100%, but you can drastically cut down on the amount that come into your life.

  • filter your water (drinking water & shower water)
  • use an air purifier
  • use natural beauty products
  • use natural cleaning products (or make your own!)

June 2019- Go Beyond the Salad

June is a great month to try a new vegetable.

There are so many to choose from!

When you think about healthy eating, salads and green vegetables usually come to mind.

Do you eat enough veggies each day? It’s recommended that we eat 3 servings a day, but the average American typically consumes only half of that. Let’s look at how we can change that…

How about adding a little more variety to your plan?

Roots like carrots, sweet potatoes, and turnips, are a rich source of nutritious complex carbohydrates. Instead of upsetting blood sugar levels like refined sweet foods do, they help regulate them.

Which root vegetables do you eat most?

If you’re like most of the world, it’s carrots and potatoes. Here are a few others to explore:

  • Beets contain an abundance of antioxidants and are highly detoxifying.
  • Burdock is considered a powerful blood purifier. This long, thin veggie is a staple in Asian and health food stores.
  • Celeriac, also known as celery root, is rich in fiber and with a respectable amount of antioxidants.
  • Jicama is crunchy and refreshing and contains a generous amount of vitamin C. It’s a favorite in its native Mexico and South America.
  • Onions are rich in antioxidants and other phytonutrients, making them prized for their ability to strengthen the immune system.
  • Parsnips, which look like giant white carrots, boast a sweet, earthy taste. They’ve also got plenty of fiber, vitamin C, folic acid, niacin, thiamine, magnesium, and potassium.
  • Radish is an excellent source of vitamin C. It’s also rich in calcium, molybdenum, and folic acid.
  • Sweet Potatoes contain unsurpassed levels of beta-carotene and are also rich in vitamin C, phytonutrients, and fiber.
